The Hobbit: Or There and Back Again The Unexpected Party The story begins with Bilbo Baggins, a quiet and respectable hobbit who loves his comfortable hole in the ground and his six meals a day. His life is turned upside down when the wizard Gandalf arrives with thirteen dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield. They are on a quest to reclaim their ancestral home, the Lonely Mountain, and its vast treasure from the fearsome dragon, Smaug. Much to his own surprise, Bilbo is hired as their "burglar."

Goblins and Gollum: In the Misty Mountains, Bilbo gets separated from the group and finds a mysterious, plain gold ring. He encounters a creature named Gollum and wins a life-or-death riddle game. The ring, he discovers, makes him invisible, allowing him to escape. Spiders and Wood-elves: Bilbo proves his worth by rescuing the dwarves from giant spiders in the dark forest of Mirkwood and later helping them escape the dungeons of the Elvenking.

The Dragon’s Lair Finally, they reach the Lonely Mountain. Using his invisibility, Bilbo enters the mountain and speaks with Smaug. He notices a bare patch in the dragon's scales. Later, Smaug flies out in a rage to attack Lake-town, but a brave archer named Bard shoots an arrow into that exact weak spot, killing the dragon.
